I have had the opportunity to work with my Yoga instructor Nicky Poole at 889 Yoga over the last couple years and more lately while I train for the Gobi Desert March. She teaches with such passion and focus to help her students for individual reasons they have chosen to work on the mat. For some, its stress release, some flexibility, inner peace, fitness, strength, community or challenge. I think for me it’s a little bit of everything. I definitely leave each session feeling rejuvenated with a feeling of progress, even if sometimes the ego bruised on a new balance posture, that tend to my nemesis.

Practice Makes permanent. Think about it. You can practice until you are able do something with out thinking. But if you practice something without a complete sense of what you’re working towards, you could perform that task with false comprehension.

This simple step by step guide explains how to create goals and a personal manifesto for 2012. We usually decide to do this at the start of the year, but re-evaluating, and refining this in the Spring Time can be very powerful too!

When I received this manifesto I started handing it out immediately. I was so excited to share it with all my students, friend, family, and even my concierge. With all this excitement I realized that I had failed to complete mine.

Creating a quiet or sacred space for one’s self, or specifically, for one’s yoga practice, is a challenge for many of us. Add a busy career, relationships and /or children and it becomes this beautiful chaos. One way I chose to simplify this juggling act was letting go bit by bit of solitary time, be it in a yoga studio or at home. That was a recipe for irritability. So finding a cozy studio that feels like “home” is rare, yet 889 has easily achieved this.

In Tibetan Buddhism there is a concept that is known as “Shenpa”, meaning attachment or a place where we get either hooked or stuck. I was first introduced to this concept when I discovered an author named Pema Chodron, a Buddhist nun, who teaches on this notion. She describes Shenpa as “an urge comes up we succumb to it, and it becomes stronger. We reinforce our craving, habits and addictions by giving in to them repeatedly.” Shenpas can be ruminating thoughts that poke away at the mind and if fed enough become very powerful and dangerous. We have all had those moments of obsessive-compulsive thinking, where you are re-playing an event and every moment you have a chance to mull it over, you cannot resist. The mind will not quiet. The ego begins to take control, you get lost in your own world, you feel the body tighten around the throat, into the chest, your breathing becomes short and shallow, anxiety and depression begins to set in … and you think to yourself, if I could only make it stop.

It’s a snowy Friday afternoon, and as dinner approaches I start to think about soup-making. I admit to being a big foodie and often explore Joy’s blog to find new recipes and ideas. Often during the holidays I make a big pot (or two) of soup and put it in glass jars for friends and family. I thought I’d share with you one of my favorite soup recipes from a book that I keep coming back to: If the Buddha Came to Dinner: How to Nourish Your Body and Awaken Your Spirit.
